Caps, Wedding, Play

Back from Alabama, Julia went with the Sarrges to watch the Capitals beat Tampa Bay in overtime. Exciting and fun times! Then she headed to the UK for a wedding in Nottingham (congrats Vy and Matt). She reconnected with friends from the University of Leeds. She'll have one more week here before returning to Fairbanks.

Here in DC, we saw Disarming Girls, a play based on the true story of how three women became unexpected heroes in the Dutch resistance against the Nazis during World War II.

R.I.P. Peanut Butter

On Saturday, we said our final goodbyes to our sweet, bambino cat Peanut Butter. He was 9 years old and taken by cancer far too soon. We're all adjusting... made easier by having Julia home.

Shelter Island Wedding

We had a delightful weekend on Shelter Island for Nick and Caroline's wedding, October 5. We met new friends, ate good food, and spent time together. I wish I had gotten videos from the dance floor--so much fun!

September Snow

Julia has developed a great rapport with her new advisor and is enjoying her work. There is talk of extending the post-doc for another year, so we'll see. So far, so good! Check out the snow! Julia comes home on October 1, and we can't wait.

In D.C., Mom and I were able to hang out with Maggie and Vickie. Maggie in particular warmed up to mom—so darn cute. It's hard to believe they will be four years old in January. Lisa and Tony were in Syracuse with Kathryn for parents' weekend!

Working, Birthdays, and Elizabeth

We are counting down the days until Julia returns to DC on October 1. Pictured here are her office and the pumpkin cookies she baked. Figuring out the best times to communicate, considering the 4-hour time difference, has been an adjustment for all of us. She’s a trooper as she adapts to the new surroundings, colleagues, and home.

Mom and Regina celebrated their birthdays together--cute pictures--84 years young.

In DC, Elizabeth came to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX expansion for the women's rowing program at Georgetown. We had a great time at the events and other activities (farmer's market, shopping, and open houses).

Exploration and Laura in Town

Julia is meeting new people, making friends, and checking out some cool places. She visited the Large Animal Research Station, a facility for breeding and raising wood bison; walked a wildfire trail; and attended a bonfire with new friends. Great news--her house has a treadmill (and she's making good use of it), a definite plus for when we visit. :)

Benjamin is busy with training. Here in DC, Laura came to town to see Mom for her birthday and some pre-wedding shopping.

First Day of Postdoc School

Julia is settling into life in Alaska. Her house is surrounded by stunning nature and a nearby ski trail. She's working at the International Arctic Research Center and has been warmly welcomed by other postdocs, professors, and staff. Check out the view from her office of the Alaska Range and Denali, the highest peak in North America.
